25/12/2024The Best Beaches in the Galapagos: Updated Guide for 2025
The Galapagos Islands are famous for their iconic biodiversity. The species that inhabit them have been the subject of fantastic tales and groundbreaking theories about change and evolution. The importance of these islands has made them one of the most desirable places for travelers around the world. And it’s easy to understand, as the beauty of the islands is unparalleled. The Galapagos boasts breathtaking landscapes, and some of the most beautiful and exotic beaches in the world were formed here.
So, those who want to enjoy the view and see wildlife up close choose this destination. That’s why we’ve provided a guide to the best beaches you can visit in the Galapagos, so you know what to see and do in this natural paradise.
1. Tortuga Bay (Santa Cruz Island)
Tortuga Bay is perhaps the most famous beach in the entire Galapagos archipelago, as it’s located on the island with the most inhabitants and other commercial activity: Santa Cruz. It’s fairly easy to get to from Puerto Ayora and is totally worth it, as this extensive white coral sand beach is the ideal place to admire the unique Galapagos landscape. Here you can relax, sunbathe, and surf if you know how. Something you should know about Tortuga Bay is that the currents tend to be quite strong; therefore, if you have trouble swimming, we don’t recommend diving into the sea.
However, don’t worry, at the western end of Tortuga Bay is Playa Mansa, a beautiful place where the sea is much calmer, ideal for swimming and practicing some water activities in a completely safe way.
2. Gardner Beach (Española Island)
Here you can enjoy snorkeling and observe a wide variety of tropical fish. You can also spot many species on the shore, as beautiful shorebird species such as blue-footed boobies and frigate birds often bask in the sun on the rocks and vegetation facing the beach.
From the hotel, we’ll walk to the pier to take a water taxi to the First-Class Yacht Galapagos Element Wind, a magnificent vessel with spacious living rooms and open deck areas so you can enjoy the horizon during your island hopping or see some species swimming in the sea, such as sea turtles, manta rays, and whales. On board, you’ll see how we approach Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island, although we’ll first pass by the Hermanos, a group of small islets with beautiful rocky outcrops that rise from the ocean. Once in Villamil, we’ll visit the lively and picturesque town, where we can see the local handicrafts and sample the delicious local food.
3. La Lobería Beach (San Cristóbal Island)
San Cristóbal is one of the main islands of the Galapagos Archipelago. What stands out most here are the colonies of sea lions that usually live on this beach. These animals are quite curious and don’t usually fear humans. In fact, when they’re smaller, they’ll likely try to approach you and play in the water. It’s important to try not to touch them, as contact could be disastrous for them.
So enjoy the beach without disturbing the species that live there.
4. Punta Cormorant Beach (Floreana Island)
Punta Cormorant is one of the most famous and unusual beaches in the Galapagos Islands, due to its olive-green sand, the result of the erosion of the volcanic cone that contains olivine crystals, which are bright green minerals that belong to a group of iron and magnesium silicates.
This is one of the places you’ll enjoy most if you’re interested in birdwatching in the Galapagos. Flamingos are often seen feeding in the nearby lagoon at Punta Cormorant. Swimming is not permitted because you may disturb the species, and this is a strictly protected area.
5. Puerto Villamil Beach (Isabela Island)
On Isabela Island, there’s a small town called Puerto Villamil, and a fine sand and white coral beach of the same name stretches along the entire shore. This beach is ideal for relaxing, swimming, joining the locals in volleyball games, and enjoying the view with a cocktail on one of the oceanfront terraces.
On this island, in addition to the beach, you’ll find the Turtle Breeding Center, where locals and naturalist guides focus their efforts on protecting endemic giant tortoise species. There are also mangrove wetlands and opuntia cactus habitats where, if you’re lucky, you might see flamingos feeding on the minerals in the water.
6. Las Bachas Beach (Santa Cruz Island)
On the north coast of Santa Cruz Island lies Las Bachas, a beach steeped in history. This spot is one of the few remnants of the United States’ participation in World War II. At the end of the war, the United States left its barges stranded on the island. Over time, the beach where the barges were located changed due to the Spanish pronunciation, eventually becoming known as “Las Bachas.”
This white-sand beach with crystal-clear waters is the ideal place for snorkeling, especially because the current is quite gentle and there is abundant tropical fish and sea turtle life.
7. El Garrapatero Beach (Santa Cruz Island)
El Garrapatero is a quiet, uncrowded beach; its shores are surrounded by mangroves and vegetation, so if you visit, you can see sea turtles feeding on the leaves that fall into the sea.
This paradise is far from any settlements and is therefore ideal for a picnic, diving into the water, or kayaking. Just remember to protect yourself from the sun, as you’ll be quite exposed to it, and if you’re not careful, you could get seriously burned.
Ultimately, the Galapagos Islands are an unforgettable destination for all visitors, especially those who love nature and wildlife. So, if you’re looking for a trip filled with experiences and idyllic landscapes, each beach has its own unique charm. Some share the beauty of white sand and blue sea, while the rocky beaches and abundant wildlife are unique to each area.
All of the Galapagos coasts we’ve mentioned offer valuable experiences, marine activities, and unique sunsets; be sure to include these spots in your itinerary and make the most of your trip.
