The best places to snorkel in the Galapagos (Updated 2025)
25/02/2025The ideal tour for traveling to the Galapagos from island to island in 2025 (8-day tour)
The Galapagos Islands are a stunning destination, no matter how you choose to visit, whether by land or sea, you’ll experience an unforgettable adventure. Truth be told, exploring the Galapagos by land with the opportunity to travel between the islands that make up the archipelago is truly more exciting, especially on a first-class island-hopping tour.
Day 1: Arrival at Baltra Island and encounter with giant tortoises
The adventure begins with arrival at Baltra Airport (which, interestingly, is the world’s first eco-friendly airport). After baggage check-in, one of our guides will be waiting for you at the main gate to lead you on your first exploration of the Galapagos. The transfer from Baltra to Santa Cruz Island is short. You’ll travel along a road surrounded by endemic Galapagos cacti to the Itabaca Channel, a truly beautiful place where the green vegetation of both islands blends with the blue sea.
Once in Santa Cruz, our private transportation will take you to the upper reaches of the island to visit a ranch where giant tortoises live. Here, you can rest and observe these iconic creatures up close in their natural environment. At the end of the day, you’ll return to your private transportation, which will take you back to your hotel in Puerto Ayora.
Day 2: Enjoying Tortuga Bay and the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
The second day in the Galapagos begins with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, where you can prepare for your visit to Tortuga Bay, one of the most famous and internationally acclaimed spots in the Galapagos. And understandably so, as this beach is ranked among the most beautiful in the world according to Condé Nast Traveller. Upon arrival, you’ll admire the soft white sand blending with the blue sea and sky. This spot is ideal for relaxing and taking photographs. Further ahead, you’ll find a peaceful beach where you can swim, snorkel, and learn about marine life.
In the afternoon, the tour will take you to the Fausto Llerena Turtle Breeding Center, where you can see turtles up close at various life stages and learn about the efforts to protect several Galapagos tortoise species. Also housed here is the embalmed “Lonesome George,” a tortoise that became world-famous for being the last specimen of its species. It is also a reminder of the importance of caring for and protecting all Galapagos species, which are what make this place so unique.
Day 3: Transfer to San Cristóbal and visit to Puerto Chino and Cerro Tijeretas
The third day starts quite early, at six in the morning, to board a boat that will take you on a trip of approximately three and a half hours to the next island you will visit, San Cristóbal Island. During the trip, you will see dolphins leaping on the surface of the sea and frigate birds soaring above the boat. Upon arrival, you will land in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galapagos Islands. This island also has a unique charm, where you can visit El Junco Lagoon and Puerto Chino.
After a well-deserved lunch in the coastal town, you’ll head to the Cristóbal Interpretation Center, a site that preserves the history of the Galapagos and offers a glimpse into research into its ecology. Then, you’ll head to Cerro Tijeretas, home to two species of frigate birds. You’ll be able to admire a panoramic view of the island and the vast Pacific Ocean.
Day 4: Discovering the magic of Floreana Island
This day requires a little more effort, but it’s worth it. At 5:30 a.m., a private shuttle will pick you up from your hotel to take you to the dock where our Galapagos Element Wind yacht will be waiting to take you to Floreana Island. The trip takes approximately 4.5 hours, depending on the tide. A “chiva” will be waiting at the dock to take you to the upper part of the island. In case you haven’t heard of one, a chiva is a tall local vehicle with no doors, allowing fresh air to flow in.
You will arrive at “Asilo de la Paz,” a historic site where the first inhabitants of Floreana settled to make a new life in 1930.
In the afternoon, after a local lunch, you’ll head to the sea lion colony and Playa Negra, a place completely different from the other beaches you’ve seen in the Galapagos. The volcanic minerals on Floreana have made the sand darker than all the others.
Day 5: Getting to know Isabela Island
Early in the morning, after a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will say goodbye to Floreana to venture on a slightly shorter cruise than the previous ones to arrive at Isabela Island, where you will be able to admire the incredible diversity of marine species such as manta rays, sea lions, iguanas and green turtles feeding on the mangroves. After leaving your luggage at your hotel, a private transfer will take you to Los Humedales, a place surrounded by mangroves and with some lagoons where you will be able to see pink flamingos if you are lucky.
After a coastal lunch, you’ll visit Las Tintoreras, a place where rocky crevices have formed over the sea and home to a large number of marine species, especially reef sharks.
Day 6: Exploring the Sierra Negra Volcano
On your sixth day in the Galapagos, you’ll have an unforgettable adventure exploring the Sierra Negra Volcano. This landscape is completely different from anything you’ve seen in the Galapagos. The weather is generally cloudy, gradually opening up as you approach the rim of the crater, which is the second largest in the world after the Ngorngoro Crater in Tanzania. The trail is filled with endemic flora, and your naturalist guide will tell you stories about the conservation of the area, as it has a very delicate ecosystem. The landscapes are unforgettable, and even more so at the top of the hike.
During the afternoon, you’ll enjoy free time to explore the coastal town at your leisure. You can visit concept stores or relax on the beach while admiring the vast sea.
Day 7: Return to Santa Cruz and Visit to Garrapatero
On the penultimate day of this adventure, you’ll return to Santa Cruz. Aboard the Galapagos Element Wind Yacht, you’ll cruise the Pacific Ocean in comfort to Puerto Ayora. After dropping off your luggage at your hotel, you’ll visit the upper reaches of the island to learn about the work of local artisans and enjoy a delicious Galapagos ceviche, immersed in the warm Galapagos atmosphere.
In the afternoon, you’ll head to Garrapatero Beach, a magical spot with nearby lagoons where flamingos and other birds of the archipelago often feed. Then, you can dive into the sea and see sea lions, turtles, and various seabirds.
Day 8: End of the adventure
On the last day of this amazing adventure you will visit the incredible rock formation Los Gemelos, volcanic depressions that decorate the Galapagos cloud forest, the tree that dominates the landscape is the Scalesia and they are home to amazing marine life, here you can pose for the last photos before your guide takes you to the airport where you will say goodbye to your travel companions and we will wait for you for a new adventure.
This first-class island hopping tour in the Galapagos Islands offers the perfect combination of adventure, relaxation, and cultural discovery.
